Global Health as an Academic Discipline
Global health in emergency medicine has evolved beyond the realm of individual passion projects into a structured and evidence-informed academic discipline. Canadian leaders in the field have consistently emphasized the need for formalized pathways that support scholarly productivity, sustainable partnerships, and community-engaged education. From foundational recommendations developed at national symposia to institutional innovations like our own GEM Centre at the University of Toronto, there is growing recognition that global health must be resourced, mentored, and evaluated with the same academic rigour as other emergency medicine subspecialties.
The GEM Centre builds on this foundation—offering a home for clinician-investigators, educators, and emergency medicine trainees to commit to improving health equity and global emergency care. Through mentorship, collaborative research, and systems-focused practice, we work to strengthen the role of global health within academic emergency medicine in Canada and beyond.
