Equity Diversity and Cultural Safety (EDACS) Curriculum
In the Summer of 2019 a new curriculum launched for emergency medicine residents at the University of Toronto to provide them with training in equity, diversity, advocacy and cultural safety (EDACS). The curriculum emphasizes skill development to equip participants to address and improve upon inequitable conditions that influence patients treated in the emergency department. Curriculum themes include specific populations experiencing marginalization and/or discrimination, for example: LGBTQ+ persons, Indigenous patients, homeless patients, persons living with addictions, newcomers to Canada, etc.
Since the inception of the EDACS curriculum, the GEM Centre has been involved in various projects related to supplementing and evaluating the EDACS curriculum.
