Dr. Nahom Mesfin Mekonen was a recipient of the TAAAC-EM Travel Award, which allowed him to travel to Botswana for AfCEM 2024. Below is his recap of the experience.

During AfCEM2024, held in Gaborone, Botswana, from November 6 to 8, I had the opportunity to engage with a diverse group of emergency medicine professionals, gaining valuable insights and perspectives on advancements and challenges in the field. Through networking and collaborative exchanges, I forged connections with fellow emergency physicians, researchers, and policymakers committed to improving emergency medical care across the continent. This experience enriched my understanding and provided actionable ideas to bring back to Eka Kotebe General Hospital.

I had the privilege of presenting my poster “Accuracy of focused cardiac ultrasound interpretation among emergency and critical care medicine residents in Ethiopia: A multi-center cross-sectional study” and joining the list of published poster presentations on the AfJEM official site https://doi.org/10.1016/j.afjem.2024.10.002. Out of more than 200 poster presentations, I was selected among the top 20, a recognition that underscored the significance of the work and its potential impact. This honour provided an excellent platform to discuss my findings with a broad audience, sparking engaging discussions and valuable feedback from colleagues across various disciplines. It was a rewarding experience that allowed me to showcase my research and represent Tikur Anbessa Specialized Hospital and Eka Kotebe General Hospital and my country Ethiopia on an international stage.

I want to express my heartfelt gratitude to everyone who made my participation at AfCEM 2024 possible. My sincere thanks go to the Supadel team for generously covering my accommodations and registration, allowing me to fully engage in this enriching experience without logistical concerns. I am also deeply appreciative of the TAAAC-EM team, whose support for my travel and visa expenses enabled me to attend and present my work on this international platform. Their support was instrumental in making this opportunity a reality, and I am grateful for their belief in the importance of my contributions to Emergency Medicine.
