DESCRIPTION:Global Health Emergency Medicine (GHEM) is pleased to invite you to our first OPEN MEETING and OPEN HOUSE of the new academic year on Tuesday October 18th from 5:00-6:30pm at Toronto General Hospital in Room 441 (on the 1st floor near the Eaton elevators (Elizabeth entrance) near the library).  \nWe wish to use this opportunity to explore how “global health” interacts here in Toronto on a local level\, through issues of health equity.  This is a growing and keen interest of our group and we encourage all to attend a talk with Dr. Naheed Doasni (see below for his bio) entitled:  \n“Living & Dying on the Streets: Palliative Care for the Homeless & Vulnerably housed” \nFollowing Dr. Dosani’s lecture members of GHEM will remain at the meeting venue for an informal OPEN HOUSE.  Please bring your questions and interest in global health from education to clinical work to research. Additionally\, please see www.ghem.ca for further Staff Bios to help spark your imagination.  \nPlease RSVP to efremes@ghem.ca \nWe look forward to seeing you\, \nMegan\nDirector\, Global Health Emergency Medicine (GHEM) \n—————————– \nNaheed Dosani\nPalliative Care Physician & Assistant Clinical Professor\nProject Lead for PEACH (Palliative Education And Care for the Homeless)\, a program of the Inner City Health Associates (ICHA) \nBeing sick\, of course\, is very hard\, but being sick and living on the street\, is even harder. Dr Naheed Dosani is a passionate and respected advocate for marginalized & vulnerable populations with palliative needs. He serves as a Palliative Care Physician at the Inner City Health Associates (ICHA) and William Osler Health System (WOHS). He recently completed the Conjoint Palliative Medicine Residency Program at the University of Toronto and prior to that\, a residency in inner-city Family Medicine\, where he was elected by his peers as Chief Resident of St. Michael’s Hospital’s Family Medicine Residency Program. After completing his training\, Dr Dosani founded PEACH (Palliative Education And Care for the Homeless)\, a mobile\, street & shelter-based service aimed at providing palliative care for the homeless & vulnerably housed. Through PEACH\, he provides Toronto’s most marginalized populations with compassionate care and a dignified approach to their end-of-life journeys. \nMore recently\, he was awarded the 2015 Early Career Development Award by the College of Family Physicians of Canada. In addition\, Dr Dosani is an Assistant Clinical Professor in the Department of Family Medicine at McMaster University and Sessional Lecturer in the Department of Anthropology at the University of Toronto Scarborough Campus (UTSC). He serves as Palliative Care Regional Medical Lead for Central West LHIN & Central West CCAC and as Section Editor for the peer-reviewed\, Canadian based and internationally distributed academic journal\, Current Oncology. \nCommitted to addressing the social determinants of health\, Dr Dosani sits on the Board of Directors of the Agincourt Community Services Association (ACSA) and on the Steering Committee for Health Providers Against Poverty (HPAP). He is an educator\, researcher and advocate\, focused on innovative and evidence-based solutions to reducing health disparities.

SUMMARY:Think global\, act local! A Global Health in Emergency Medicine (GHEM) Open Meeting
DESCRIPTION:One of the ways to address the challenge of global disparity\, as a health care provider\, is to  pack your bags\, say goodbye to your family\, your practice\, and put yourself at the bedside of people who suffer its ills. Even if you are able to do this\, how do you integrate the themes that inspired you upon your return?   Are there others ways to remain involved\, closer to home?  It is with great pleasure that we continue to showcase the depths of Toronto’s EM community\, and its commitment to global health.  For this “open” meeting\,  a panel discussion available to the public\, we are exploring how physicians and nurses have combined a world view with a Toronto career.   \nPanelists:\nWendy Lai – Wendy is an emergency physician at Humber River Hospital\, has done 5 missions with MSF\, is on the Board of Directors for MSF-Canada\, and volunteers at the Community Volunteer Clinic in Scarborough\, which is part of the Canadian Centre for Refugee and Immigrant Health Care. She is part of a group of concerned citizens\, called Ripple Refugee Project\, that is sponsoring a refugee Syrian family to settle in Canada. \nRaghu Venugopal – Raghu is an emergency physician at UHN\, has been active with MSF on 6 field assignments\, is on the MSF Board of Directors and as allocator for MSF’s telemedicine system. He has supported the University of Toronto Addis Ababa collaboration in the past\, and with Dr. Wendy Lai\, co-sponsored a Syrian family of 8 recently\, with hopes of more families to follow. \nVanessa Wright – Vanessa is a Nurse Practitioner at Women’s College Hospital’s Crossroads Clinic\, where she provides comprehensive medical services to newly arrived refugee patients. She has supported the educational partnership between Addis Ababa University and the University of Toronto\, and worked as a Field Nurse for MSF. She sits of the health advisory council for the Canadian Centre for Victims of Torture. \nModerator:\nJames Maskalyk – James is an emergency physician at St. Mike’s\, and has been active in global health since 2001.  He has worked with MSF as physician and journalist\, and currently directs both GHEM and the Toronto based program\, TAAAC-EM that teaches emergency medicine in Ethiopia\, and supports the growth of the specialty.

DESCRIPTION:On Thursday\, March 3\, 2016\, the CSIS Global Health Policy Center will host a conference on Ethiopia’s health system\, its successes\, and enduring challenges. SUMMARY:Complexity and the Ethics of Systems Thinking in Global Health
DESCRIPTION:Global health is inherently complex\, comprising as it does of a myriad of biological and social features. The complexity of health\, however\, lies not only in the countless ways biology and society – including economic and political forces – interact\, but also in the nonlinear\, dynamic\, and\, at times\, counter-intuitive manner such factors affect each other. Systems sciences\, or systems thinking\, study the various parts of a given system and the interactions between these parts. In the last decades\, systems thinking has grown from its roots in engineering and math to begin to tackle many complex social problems\, including challenges seen in global health and public health. The various systems theories each have assumptions used to conceptualize problems and their potential solutions\, including normative assumptions about what ought to be the goals of global health and how to bring them about. To date\, the various ethical and political assumptions underlying systems thinking in global health have received little examination\, but the tide is changing; at the very least\, there is a growing recognition from systems scientists and bioethics scholars about the importance of understanding the values that underpin the various systems of global health and the theories used to make sense of their complexity. \nMore information and registration: http://munkschool.utoronto.ca/event/19267/

DESCRIPTION:The skills we learn in medical school\, and after this\, our residency\, allow our medical knowledge to flourish. After graduation\, with experience\, we become better clinicians\, more able to meet our patients’ needs. However\, this contact does not mean we know how to build a successful life. That is the real work\, and so much more difficult in setting where demands\, inside the hospital and out\, can seem much higher than opportunities. \nDuring this weekend retreat\, we will discuss with experts in the field\, Ethiopian and international\, how to make a medical career that is successful and exciting enough to last a lifetime\, and balance it so your personal life is as rich as your professional one. \nThere will be a mix of panels\, small groups\, and (very few) lectures\, that explore themes related to leadership\, unique to the Ethiopian setting\, but applicable to others like it. \n  \nhttps://www.facebook.com/events/1630527800556609/
