SUMMARY:International Humanitarian Studies Conference
DESCRIPTION:The 5th bi-annual conference of the International Humanitarian Studies Association will take place in The Hague\, The Netherlands from 27 to 29 August 2018. \nThe overall theme of this year’s conference is: (Re-)Shaping Boundaries in Crisis and Crisis Response. \nCrisis and humanitarianism has always been about boundaries. The classic view of a crisis is an exceptional moment\, bounded in time and space. Humanitarian action was therefore seen as a necessarily limited endeavour which has a narrow but principled focus on saving lives and alleviating suffering. Setting clear boundaries around crisis were meant to distinguish crisis from normality and legitimate extraordinary measures to accommodate its effects. \nCALL FOR PANELS: CLOSES MARCH 1\, 2018.\nThis conference invites panels that examine boundaries from all different angles\, ranging from the intentions and practices of government control\, international law\, the ways in which people organize themselves in the face of crisis and\, the rapid transformation of technological limits and the boundaries of humanitarian action. What are the new factors that are influencing the dynamics of crisis response and the dilemmas of humanitarian action? How to understand and respond to attempts by the EU to control refugee flows in and from Libya\, north Africa and the Sahel? Is it possible to think of humanitarian crises as a way to move towards a uniting world with fewer boundaries? \nVisit the conference website for more information: https://conference.ihsa.info/

SUMMARY:PGME Global Health Day - Humanizing Global Health: Achieving Equity
DESCRIPTION:All Residents\, Fellows and Faculty are welcome to attend the\n\n2017 PGME 4th ANNUAL GLOBAL HEALTH DAY – HUMANIZING GLOBAL HEALTH: ACHIEVING EQUITY\n \nFull details from this link\nMandatory but complimentary registration from this link\n\n\n*******************\n\nOpening Address on ‘Humanizing Global Health’\nby Dr. James Lavery\, international leader in global health ethics\, community engagement\, and the ethics of international research  \n\nSchedule – Plan to attend all or part of the day as your schedule allows\n\n\n11:30am Lunch\n12:30pm Welcome and Opening Address\n2:15pm Roundtables #1 – #4\n3:30pm Roundtables #5 – #8\n4:30pm Networking and Reception\n\n\n\nGlobal Health Day Theme\nThe world is rapidly globalizing at a pace that’s hard to fully comprehend. New technology allows for healthcare innovation and accessibility that is unprecedented in many sectors. However\, despite these incredible advances\, health inequity persists – in many ways the disparity is more prevalent now than it ever has been. At the 2016 World Economic Summit\, Oxfam reported that “in 2015\, just 62 individuals had the same wealth as 3.6 billion people – the bottom half of humanity. This figure is down from 388 individuals as recently as 2010.” (Oxfam\, Briefing Paper\, January 18\, 2016)\n\nWhy do these incredible inequities exist globally and in our own backyard? Why have the monumental advances in health care not improved the lives of marginalized populations living in extreme circumstances of economic and social isolation? Where have we gone wrong and how do we get back on the right path?\n \nGlobal Health Day Objectives\nThe 2017 Global Health Day\, led by PGME\, includes University of Toronto leadership across disciplines dedicated to urgent global health issues. With the goal of achieving “equity and humanizing global health\,” Global Health Day is an education initiative with objectives to: \n\n\nDevelop a deeper understanding of the social\, political\, economic\, and professional challenges to improving global health for all.\nEncourage critical thought about how inequities can be overcome.\nIntroduce themes and issues from across disciplines on the challenges of inequity in global health.\nIdentify opportunities to continue your global health interests\, education\, and experience\n\n\n\n\n\n\n

SUMMARY:Think global\, act local! A Global Health in Emergency Medicine (GHEM) Open Meeting
DESCRIPTION:One of the ways to address the challenge of global disparity\, as a health care provider\, is to  pack your bags\, say goodbye to your family\, your practice\, and put yourself at the bedside of people who suffer its ills. Even if you are able to do this\, how do you integrate the themes that inspired you upon your return?   Are there others ways to remain involved\, closer to home?  It is with great pleasure that we continue to showcase the depths of Toronto’s EM community\, and its commitment to global health.  For this “open” meeting\,  a panel discussion available to the public\, we are exploring how physicians and nurses have combined a world view with a Toronto career.   \nPanelists:\nWendy Lai – Wendy is an emergency physician at Humber River Hospital\, has done 5 missions with MSF\, is on the Board of Directors for MSF-Canada\, and volunteers at the Community Volunteer Clinic in Scarborough\, which is part of the Canadian Centre for Refugee and Immigrant Health Care. She is part of a group of concerned citizens\, called Ripple Refugee Project\, that is sponsoring a refugee Syrian family to settle in Canada. \nRaghu Venugopal – Raghu is an emergency physician at UHN\, has been active with MSF on 6 field assignments\, is on the MSF Board of Directors and as allocator for MSF’s telemedicine system. He has supported the University of Toronto Addis Ababa collaboration in the past\, and with Dr. Wendy Lai\, co-sponsored a Syrian family of 8 recently\, with hopes of more families to follow. \nVanessa Wright – Vanessa is a Nurse Practitioner at Women’s College Hospital’s Crossroads Clinic\, where she provides comprehensive medical services to newly arrived refugee patients. She has supported the educational partnership between Addis Ababa University and the University of Toronto\, and worked as a Field Nurse for MSF. She sits of the health advisory council for the Canadian Centre for Victims of Torture. \nModerator:\nJames Maskalyk – James is an emergency physician at St. Mike’s\, and has been active in global health since 2001.  He has worked with MSF as physician and journalist\, and currently directs both GHEM and the Toronto based program\, TAAAC-EM that teaches emergency medicine in Ethiopia\, and supports the growth of the specialty.
